Reader "deadipod" sent in a link to this page detailing the cause of his non-mounting iPod.
...after I decided that I did not want Apple to replace my 'Not mounting anymore' ipod [for] $250. I had some files I worked on last night at home and needed them. I wasn t going to have a replacement. so before deciding on getting a new 10 gig I decided to see if I could remove the HD. (Apple doesn t fix ipods, they replace them)
At this point I knew the HD was fine since I could play mp3s and I could recharge the ipod too, also all harware tests were working. But I noticed that if I moved the firewire cable a bit while it was plugged the ipod would not charge anymore. I knew it was a connectors issue then.

Re: Why iPods Stop Mounting
So if we make sure to gently plug/unplug the firewire cable, those four solder points should not come loose.
Re: Why iPods Stop Mounting
That is a snap to fix. Just need a steady hand.
I have worked on dozens of powerbooks that had power connector jacks come loose. I was able to solder all of them back to health very easily and for much less than replacing a board.
Go for it!
Re: Why iPods Stop Mounting
I had exactly this problem, but it occurred IMMEDIATELY after plugging into an external FW drive. I wasn't aware that this was a bad idea, but can only imagine some kind of power surge fried something. A tech at the apple store where I bought the iPod told me that it is never a good idea to plug the iPod into anything but the machine itself. He then gave me a new iPod free of charge which was pretty righteous considering I was well past the 90 day warranty.
